There have been 15 presidents in 16 administrations in my lifetime. Even though I was very young I remember my ration book from WW2, that my mother worked (as a volunteer) for the Red Cross, my father owned the weekly, local newspaper, and from time to time we would refugees from Europe stay with us until they were able to get settled. One was a painter and I still have two of his works, a portrait of me, and another of my mother. Perhaps these earliest experiences are why I have had a livelong interest in world affairs and history. As a country we have not always lived up to our image of ourselves, and we made mistakes (usually in the name of profit) but I still believe that, at our core, we want the best of the world. (Sounds a little high-falutin', but it is what I believe.) That is until recently. There have been many markers in the last 50 years of how aspects of our society have been changing, some obvious, but many far more subtle. Analogy, waking up one morning and seeing that...all of a sudden...your hair is grey. And that is where I believe we are today. I certainly would never have believed that t would have been elected president...good grief, twice. And I certainly would never have believe that we would attack another country in an act of war...not matter how bad the regime. He and his moronic minions have no idea what they have leashed. But I forgot, it wasn't their fault. And poor baby, didn't have time to fix his hair, so had to wear one of his stupid baseball caps all day.
The word Congress is too inclusive. It discounts what most Democrats try to do and only increases our frustrated cynicism. More accurate would be that Republicans are complicit.
I truly wish people would Stop referring to republicans as the "GOP." That designation once stood for "Grand Old Party" in the days of Abraham Lincoln's republican presidency. Today, the majority of them are most certainly "old," but the "party" they once were is now nothing more than a collection of incredibly cruel fascists, and those who think these MAGATS are "grand" are going to burn in hell along with the leaders of their cult.
When will Republicans assert their responsibility to defend us against enemies, foreign AND domestic? Why are only Kinzinger, Cheney, and Swalwell daring to buck the groupthink madness?
I've never liked Republicans. Now, they're all RINO, hardly "the party of Lincoln." They've gone from deplorable to despicable. Probably decent people in their ranks, but they need leaders to rescue the party from the shame it deserves.
So, Iran is backed by Russia and by China. Perhaps, the plan is destroy United States and Drumpf is the Manchurian candidate and Putin’s and Xi’s puppet. The dominionist movement is hot for an apocalyptic event / crusade that destroys all the sinners leaving them (the saints) to rule the earth. These pawns and patsies have been successfully brainwashed to believe they will survive and end up in a better world and if others die it is because they don’t have enough faith. Paula White is in the White House whispering in the president’s ear her false prophecies all the while flattering him. Why doesn’t congress bring her in for questioning? I think one of the reasons the democrats waffle is because many of them are also in or influenced by this dominionist movement.
No, the Dominionist movement is openly hostile to the Democratic Party, as Dominionism is openly hostile to democracy itself. For instance, there is no anti-gay caucus in the Democratic Party. You'd need one if you were going to accommodate Dominionists.
It is another strain of anti-Enlightenment conservatism, which is the most evil ideological force in human history. We love Rick. We love our reasonable conservatives whether we as liberals agree with them on everything or not.
I will pick on this comment - which is excellent - to once again ask - Can we stop calling them/their party/etc any form of Conservative/conservative/whatever "c" you want?
They stopped being that in 1982 with Reagan's tax cuts and have since doubled/tripled/quad'd down on NOT being conservative/Conservative.
They are, as both of you say, Dominionists.
They want a theocracy, never mind the men behind the curtain who rape, self enrich, philander, lie, cheat and steal. Reagan himself was nothing more than a mid level IQ-er who specialized in folksy sound bites, with puppeteers like Schultz, Peggy Noonan et al to write the messages for him.
If Reagan's tax cuts didn't end conservatism, Family Values did.
And if THAT didn't end conservatism, vacuous clods like Palin, W, Trump and and the blow dried mannequins on Fox News did.
Anti intellectual Dominionists is what they are. Forgive them Lord, for they know not what they do
Well you don't want to make this a word game and quibble over what things are called. Conservatism as a warning about our human tendency to hubris is a very important thing. But this kind of conservatism which arose much later during the Industrial Revolution has to unquestioningly accept the tenets of small-l liberal democracy, particularly the rule of law. The Anglo-Irish MP Edmund Burke was an Enlightenment conservative; he scourged the French Revolution and supported the American Revolution. Joseph de Maistre, a lead voice of the Counter-Reformation, was an anti-Enlightenment conservative.
William F. Buckley, Jr. was an Enlightenment conservative. Robert Welsh, who founded the John Birch Society, was an anti-Enlightenment conservative.
Enlightenment conservatism centers Reason. It doesn't mean that all Enlightenment conservatives are necessary secular; devout Christians like David French and Peter Wehner are also Enlightenment conservatives,
That doesn't speak of a political ideology necessarily; that's just demagogy, and there can be demagogues on our side as well.
Rick's brand of conservatism -- an abiding respect for the rule of law, anti-monopoly in the name of free enterprise, firm support for the Bill of Rights, respect for our natural resources -- is an entirely healthy intellectual tendency to have in a liberal democracy.
JD Vance's brand of conservatism, not so much.
Thing is, they're both fairly identified as conservatism. Rick's brand arose when the captains of industry merged with the English liberals at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution in the name of free trade.
JD Vance's brand of ethnocentrism-cuz-God-sez-so conservatism is as old as civilization itself.
God keep our troops safe. I wish I could get behind this war but they didn’t hit the USA. MOMMA always said if a bully hits you, you hit them back harder. You gotta wait till they hit you first

The most epically cynical take on this (which could very well turn out to be epically true) is that Putin pushed Trump to this to jack up global oil prices to keep Putin's tottering war economy going.
Is this really about Iran? Do not underestimate the lengths to which this administration will go to control the narrative and change the subject putting so many in harms way.
As we think about unintended consequences, remember that Ukraine learned how to sink Russian ships with massive drone attacks. What happens if, God forbid, Iran does the same?
