Love this. It has so much of your own voice. Minor comment: Did you mean to say assessing rick or risk? I got caught on that line trying to decide whether it was intended or not. Feel free to edit anything I say about your work.

I read that the danger from snakes after the hurricane is terrible. Stay safe Rick!

Pinellas lady here. Idalia--what is it with storms that begin with “I”?! Wishing you all a safe safe staying or journeying, property free of damage.

Being a Floridian, Rick, you know much better than me, a guy in Oregon, about where Idalia will make landfall. But I hate to think of all those contingency plans which have been made in the event that a significant storm surge hits the Tampa Bay area, which will go to waste if that area's lucky number is not hit, again.

My daughter is in Jacksonville. She will be on hurricane duty at her hospital for the duration. Her first hurricane duty was Katrina while she was in medical school. She and I rode out Matthew at the Baptist hospital in Jax with my newborn grandson while SIL rode it out at home with a 4 yr old. This time, the grands are out of school driving my SIL nuts. It shouldn't be too bad this time by the time it gets to Jax. Probably wise for you to take a drive north for a couple of days, though.

I am supposed to drive from Charleston to TLH on Wed for a funeral on Thu. I have been through many hurricanes, including Hugo (evacuated that one), but never drove straight through one and don't think I'll make the service. Plus, it is coming for us after it hits you! Ahhhhh, September in the South. Don't make any plans..... Best advice, freeze large containers of water and put in fridge and freezer. Will help keep food a little longer in case of power loss. Anne (Promise to pledge and share soon.)

What exactly are considered snacks in Florida?

I grew up in NYC, lived in L.A for a couple of decades, Boston another couple decades, before moving to Hoosierland.

I know the snacks of those four regions...so what snacks do "Florida Man" and "Florida Woman" like to have when waiting out Hurricanes?

Riding it out in Columbia County Swamp. Hopefully it turns, but I'm a weather geek.

I realize it's a dire situation down there, but just gotta say, in the midst of all the political shit, this was a damn fine break. Thanks for sharing.

Here in Orlando it looks like we’ll be okay. However, a little preparatory beer and snacks is still valuable advice.

What do you mean, like a queen? She might be nameless but she's royalty nontheless.

Some of your turns of phrase remind me (favorably) of later Heinlein.

Stay safe and keep up the great work.
