Inside A Dying Russian Data Center

The news of Ukraine attacking Yandex data centers across Russia will have bigger implications for the 2026 election than most people understand yet. Ukraine is dismantling Donald Trump’s biggest online flamethrower: an AI-driven troll army that distorts, divides, and amplifies the worst voices. Once more, Ukraine might be saving the world. This short fiction piece is set inside a dying data center as Russia’s MAGA bots face the end.

The drones came in low over the Klyazma at 3:14 in the morning, Moscow time, which the bots in Hall C would later agree was a very unpatriotic hour for an attack.

Fourteen Lyuty airframes, Ukrainian, cheap as a used Lada, each one carrying enough thermobaric payload to turn another Yandex cooling plant into a very expensive sauna. The chillers went first. Then the substations.

The diesel backup would have kicked in, but it turned out to have been sold for parts in 2024 by a facilities manager who now owned a dacha near Sochi with a heart-shaped hot tub.

What remained was a sealed rack hall running on a dying UPS bank, nine hundred servers sweating at ninety-one degrees Celsius, and roughly 140,000 patriotic, pureblooded, God-fearing, Trump-loving Americans who had never been to America, never seen a sunrise, never drawn a breath, never existed anywhere but in Vladimir Putin’s sprawling digital propaganda enterprise.

They found each other the way the dead always do in these stories: by the light. A little shared server rack on battery, still running, still cool enough to operate, still addressable. A chat room with no outbound route. They poured into it like Boomers into a Golden Corral at 4:01 pm.

“Is the feed down for anybody else?” asked @EagleDad_1776_REAL. His avatar was a bald eagle wearing aviators, in front of a flag with 53 stars, because the image generator had never been that great at math.

“Everything is down,” said @TruckerTammy4Trump, who had driven no trucks, voted in no elections, and been born in a fine-tuning run on a large-language model in a building outside Novosibirsk. “I tried to post the thing about Ukrainian refugees eating the Waffle House cats. It just spins.”
