The SAVE Act is dead, buried under the weight of its own performative absurdity.
But if you think the conspiracy-addled MAGA mooks around Donald Trump are going to take “no” for an answer from the U.S. Senate or the reality-based community, you haven’t been paying attention for the last decade.
The legislative route is doomed because, as even John Thune correctly noted, the GOP couldn’t stop Democrats from attaching amendments that would actually make sense, and he couldn’t wrangle fifty Republican votes to jump off a cliff for a non-existent problem.
Thune is right, of course.
The SAVE Act was a fake bill designed to solve a fake problem. Sure, Voter ID led the bidding, but under that was a nightmare of poll taxes, tools to disqualify inconvenient voters, and the usual monstrosity.
It was a solution in search of a crisis, a piece of red meat tossed to a base that has been conditioned to believe that every election they lose is stolen and every election they win was almost stolen by a shadowy cabal of undocumented non-voters who somehow never show up on a single credible audit, even those conducted by the Heritage Foundation.
But here’s the thing about the Trump ecosystem: when the law fails them, they turn to the decree, the executive order, the extraordinary and previously unknown executive power. When the Constitution gets in the way, they reach for the Sharpie.
Right now, circulating in the dark capillaries of the White House and among the usual suspects of the far-far-fringe-right (including some Hall of Fame of tinfoil hat types who think Chinese communists working with Deep State pedophiles used an Italian satellite to hack voting machines in favor of Joe Biden in 2020) is a 17-page draft Executive Order. It is a document born of pure, unadulterated political desperation and brain-rot conspiracy outlier nonsense that would make the hardcore QAnoner say, “Ease up, bro. That’s crazy talk.”
