It occurs to me that a Qatari plane probably had a sanctified place of prayer in it for devout Muslims. Does this area have to be desanctified like a Catholic Church that falls out of use? And has this been done? Will Trump have this part converted to a chapel for his Christian nationalist followers?
It looks like they didn't have the votes to pass the BBB today. Back to the draw-and-quartering board. As word gets out--into the Fox ecosphere, etc.--Bubba and friends may have a second think about Dear Leader. He looks so absurd now, "Well there are too many countries to do enough tariff deals so I'll just have to go it alone." And props to Walmart for making it real about why they're raising prices. Keep it up commerce. Drive that spike. Anyway, I agree it is too early for Dem candidates for Prez to be out their beating the bushes. They should be beating the Republicans, hard, over the head and showing it loud and often across as many media platforms as possible. Ferchrissakes, would someone please inject steel into the spines of the Dems and help me sleep at night?
I dunno, Robyn; "Democrats aren't doing anything" has become such a trope and I just don't see it. What would you like them to do? I mean, sure, burning Trump in effigy on the Capitol steps might be fun and we could toast some marshmallows, but considering that the FBI is investigating James Comey for a cringe meme, it might not be so productive.
I get my news from YouTube. Every time I fire it up, there are thumbnails and thumbnails of Democrats doing something. Chuck Schumer just put a hold on judicial nominations over FlyingBrothelGate. Bernie and AOC are barnstorming red states and drawing big crowds. Democrat after Democrat are tearing the bark off Trump's cabinet in committee, leaving many of them speechless with deer-in-the-headlight expressions (cf. what Chris Murphy did to Kristi Noem last week). What more, exactly, are you looking for from the party out of power?
"Trump to UAE president: "We have a term, 'groceries.' It's an old term but it means basically what you're buying, food, it's a pretty accurate term but it's an old-fashioned sound but groceries are down."
PS that's also a lie. The prices are not "down". All of this is the Republicans fault.
I’m looking for efforts to break through the corporate and new media with those examples. Every day, relentlessly. Leading protests at Fox, CNN, SBC, CBS with the goal of having the many protests going on actually covered, to buck up those who are putting it on the line (like me) and to encourage others to join the Resistance. I want Dems to use some of their campaign funds to hold Vet town halls, record their stories and blast it all over the internet. I want them to hire an army of Gen Z messengers who know how to flood the internet zone with examples of the few brave Dems who are finally standing up and standing tall. I want the Senate Dems to dump Schumer (he’s a disgrace and feckless, too little, too late.) Maybe replace him with Chris Murphy or one of the many women who are taking it to the Cabinet. I want leaders to lead, with passion, and fury, and stop being up in their heads, poll testing everything to zero impact once delivered. The Democratic Party is polling in the 20’s. I don’t see much effort to turn that around. Read the signs: the economy will only worsen and that’s the opening Dems should be prepared to exploit, again, with passion and fury. Get a clue from the Lincoln Project and hire Never-Trump Republicans operatives to help shape and deliver a message of hope and change, to knock the Trump Train off the tracks. That’s what I’d like them to do.
God, he is so stupid, crass and embarrassing. I’m sure each of the potentates in each of the countries he visited are laughing their asses off. AI for terrorist finders. Great, Trump. Make America Dangerous AGain.
Thanks Rick. Loved the personalized story of science saving a child from certain death. The Lincoln Project richly deserved the Webby win. You guys bring journalism over the top. As a lifelong Democrat I do not understand why the leadership cannot keep from fighting windmills. It’s so frustrating. And MAGA grandmothers aren’t the only ones feeling pissed off about the BBB but they are going to ram it down our throats anyway. Trying to stay sane in an insane world. Enjoy being home, stay safe and well. Post the cat pictures if you feel up to it.
It just failed in committee today. The fact that they allowed a vote anyway is good sign they don't know how to square the circle between screw-the-poor deficit uber-hawks and blue state SALT deduction wanters.
It’s hard to comprehend how Maga can be so easily duped, but then one has to only remember during Covid when they would raise a fist from their stretcher going into the hospital to die because they wouldn’t get vaccinated
Religion can be so poisonous. It's the same basic mentality as Islamist suicide bombers, especially since these mongos also doubtless coughed all over their loved ones.
Congratulations again, on your well deserved Webby awards. I hope you get some time to rest and enjoy the company of the lovely Renee. I certainly hope you and the Lincoln team have some great things coming up to turn around the messaging to repair the Dems image. May Roberts can get together with Schumer and they can write a superior strongly worded letter. Otherwise, I'm playing my teeny violin for Roberts' problems. They are self inflicted.
Hey whiny boys, get out of your mom's basement, delete your stupid games and grow a pair. I am sick of hearing how poor little white boys have such unfair man problems. STFU and help your country. Join the military, that will make a man out of you. Maybe.
Maybe I missed something in the paragraph that young men/boys are in trouble. Was it referring to boys/men of color? Unless, you're not white, I don't see what is happening in the white men community that is trouble ahead. I'm white. The trouble I see, is for men/boys of color, women of any color and marginalized groups. I get that these are hard times for most people, but you still have the advantage of being a white, male on your side.
I'm thinking maybe it's the young white men who pick up assault type weapons and slaughter people for no reason. They have been radicalized somehow. So far, I know of only 1 female perpetrator in Tennessee and she was intercepted in time.
An aside: Trump is likening himself to a King. As someone who grew up in the NYC metro area, he’s had dubious advisors, and brushes with crime families. No one is calling him a mob boss, but isn’t that how he’s acting?
I’m not a guy who’s big on mysticism, religion, or an afterlife. Nor am I big on mystical forces such as luck, fate, or karma. But every once in a while, things happen in life that do make me pause.
So now we will talk about James Comey. We all remember him well, don’t we? The FBI director whose unbearable, self-righteous piety ultimately cost Hillary Clinton her presidency? Well yesterday he tweeted out a snapshot from a beach that said 86 47. And my, oh my, how the right wing has found their newest hate meme to stir middle America into a frenzied dither.
Now, when I was a much younger man, I worked as a line cook and, eventually, a Sioux chef. We used the term 86 frequently when menu items sold out.
Lobster oversold? We’d tell the wait servers, “Lobster is 86’d from the menu.”
Steak? Same thing.
86 does not mean assassinate Trump. It means remove this fat, ignorant, corrupt, sweaty, inchoate, incontinent malcontent from the presidency.
But Fox News? Oh no, no, no. In their paranoid, weak, conspiratorial minds they are now blasting out into the ether that Comey wants Trump assassinated.
Now, we all know this isn’t true. The Fox News fiction writers in the writer’s room knows this isn’t true. But after having watched one man, Comey, literally hammer the final coffin nail in what may be the end of our democracy, I cannot help but feel a glint of satisfaction at watching this asshole be on the receiving end of all he helped to create.
Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein is a PERFECT metaphor. The book, I mean. Not the bastardized Hollywood versions those half-talented fools churn out every year.
Her book is less about the monster, and far more about the man who brought the dead back to life. And that’s Comey.
He took what was a dead campaign, and went before the entire nation and alleged corruption when there was none. And now, think about what it has done to him.
It cost him his job. He tried a career as author that took off like a land trapped dodo bird. And now, he’s being accused of threading execution of Trump, and the FBI may even bring criminal charges against him out of pure spite.
And you know what? I have no sympathy for him. I honestly don’t believe for one minute Comey meant that meme as a death threat.
But since he helped create his own monster, I’ll now tip a nod to the possibilities, at least, to Karma and fate. Maybe you two forces really don’t exist, but I’ll permit myself a moment to believe they do.
And now, if only for one day, I’ll even give Fox News a pass.
Comey Comey’d himself today.
But look on the bright side, sir. You’ll always have her emails.
Sorry to rain on your parade, Bob. Sous-chef could be translated as assistant cook in English but we would never use “second chief”. In fact the only translation for chef would be cuisinier, but it is never used to describe a high-end cook. A sous-chef normally reports to the Chef de cuisine or Head chef who reports to the chef exécutif or executive chef.
"Sous" translates to "below," so my bad. However, from the 'pedia:
"A sous-chef is a chef who is second in command of a kitchen, ranking directly below the head chef.[1] In large kitchens, sous-chefs generally manage members of the kitchen on behalf of the head chef, who is usually preoccupied with other tasks.[2]"
Sous can translate to below, under, pennies, sub. Sous-chefs are not ranked in order of importance as they provide guidance and expertise in their particular specialty, e.g. saucier, pastry, etc. In fact high end restaurants have a number of sous-chefs. I have 2 children living in France and one is an accredited sommelier and trained chef living in Avignon , so I’m familiar with the jargon used in that industry.
I should add that bilingual dictionaries don’t always provide the exact translation for words used in general parlance. You may also be interested in googling Chef Georges Auguste Escoffier, responsible for the idea of naming the kitchen brigade, although it is now adapted for size and scope of restaurant.
What's interesting here as it relates to Eric's post is that "86" is a term that apparently comes from the food service industry. It means "to remove," whether spoiling food from storage or an item from the menu. It's also used in the military, in logistics, not combat, with the same meaning.
It does not have an underworld meaning of "to murder."
Siouxie and the Banshees is a great pun, but I just think Sioux chef is hysterical ;) For the life of me, I don't understand how people can type more than two sentences on their phones, which are made for short text messages, not forum-style posts.
Hell, when you type on a laptop through the web and not an app on your phone, you can edit your posts. Nearly all of my posts were edited at least once for typos.
Yes, a Sioux chef, carefully brazing that fillet of buffalo ;)
I don't want to sound like a full keyboard snob even if I am a full keyboard snob, but I haven't the slightest idea how anyone even tolerates autocorrect. I'm also extremely weird, as I am the last man in North America who refuses to own a mobile phone.
Not to avoid autocorrect, to avoid (or at least minimize) tracking and surveillance. It's a hassle when I'm traveling but it's still worth it.
Comey knew exactly what he was saying in that text. And he just said what many of us are thinking. Of course MAGAs are clutching their pearls. They'd have to set up another fake assassination attempt on their Dear Leader. I think one of the worse things about them is their sheer, utter hypocrisy. They talked utter, hateful trash about the Biden family for years, including crickets about that disgusting tailgate wrap involving Biden. I have never disliked a group of people like I dislike them (actually there's much stronger words for my feelings about them).
You raise a good point. Decades from now, an inquiry may find that the assassination attempt was, indeed, a setup. If so, the level of skill to pull it off with so many variables involved was stunning, especially given the raw incompetence of his entire administration. They must've subbed it out.
😆😆😆
It occurs to me that a Qatari plane probably had a sanctified place of prayer in it for devout Muslims. Does this area have to be desanctified like a Catholic Church that falls out of use? Oh and doubtless with a big assist from Trump's Big, Beautiful tax giveaway *cough* Bill, Moody's downgraded our national credit rating today.
The article on the BBB is very informative and needs to be shared everywhere.

Rick,
You were spot on with BBB. It couldn't make it through committee. But why do you bring something up for a vote unless you have the votes to pass it
Seems like incompetence doesn't it? Sometimes the answer isn't that complex.
An aside: Trump is likening himself to a King. As someone who grew up in the NYC metro area, he’s had dubious advisors, and brushes with crime families. No one is calling him a mob boss, but isn’t that how he’s acting?
James Comey gets Comey’d.

You were a Sioux chef? Cool. What was your specialty? Frybread? Three Sisters succotash? Dang, hungry now.
Extra credit for using "inchoate". 👌
You were not a Sioux chef, Eric. You did not change your ethnicity ;)
You were a sous chef. It's a French word meaning "second." Like chef means "chief."
The Comey story is a nothingburger and we shouldn't give it oxygen.

I laughed at it because it was cute. An unintentional funny. I've had autocorrect do crazy things, but I think this one is the best.
Yes, a Sioux chef, carefully brazing that fillet of buffalo ;)

Girl, we all feel that way about right wing propaganda. And they’ve gotten much worse over the years
