Politico’s Jonathan Martin had a magazine piece over the weekend that caught the mood inside the GOP: a party that spent a year insisting the Senate map was impregnable is now loudly asking what happens if it isn’t.
The answer is arriving in the polling, and it’s arriving weekly.

North Carolina is functionally gone for Republicans. Roy Cooper has led Michael Whatley in every public poll of the cycle, with the August surveys showing him up eight to thirteen points. Cook has it Lean D, and that’s generous to Whatley, who is not, to put it mildly, a gifted candidate.
Ohio flipped this week in most of the models. Sherrod Brown has now led all three polls conducted entirely in August, including a Fox survey putting him at 53 to 45 over Jon Husted, who is sitting on six million dollars in the bank while getting hammered as “the face of data centers.” Republican operatives told NBC he’s “getting thrashed.” Husted has also remained tied to wife-beater Congressman Max Miller, which is a rookie mistake.
