Every campaign operative I ever worked on kept a small mental shrine to the October Surprise, a campaign lares. We pondered it. We feared it. We plotted it. We spent opposition research money in July hoping to set one off in the last three weeks, like Catholic schoolboys lighting candles for a snow day.
This year, MAGA really, really, really needed an October Surprise, and they blew it.
