Trump’s Transgender Ad Problem

It's about He/Him, Not They/Them

Donald Trump and other Republicans upwards of $30 million this election cycle pushing a pernicious lie about “transgender surgery for Federal prisoners and illegal immigrants.” It works with some of their base, to be sure, but in a normal world a tiny bit of due diligence would have revealed that the entire “transgender surgery for prisoners” trope was a policy that written in the Trump era.

The policy they’re attacking was the Trump administration own. For a man who dropped an executive order on the slightest whim, Trump never seemed to care about this issue until now. Weird, right?

Other organizations have been slow off the market to push back on this, fearing they can’t make the right ad to expose the Trump lie, even though Harris herself, took Bret Baier to the woodshed on this during their Fox interview.

Today, we’re releasing an ad to push back on the MAGA transgender fearmongering — exactly 2 people have pursued it, so it’s not exactly a scale problem. What does indicated is Trump’s absolute contempt for his base and his belief that they’re too slow and cosseted by the MAGA ad bubble to realize they’re being played.

His spot works to generate enthusiasm with their base, particularly the most aggressive Christian Nationalists and the bro-vote. It’s done some damage to Democrats by hitting African American, Hispanic, and working-class white men, so we’re punching back.

Here’s a little insight from doing this for a while that many of our Democratic friends don’t understand: there’s a natural inclination to litigate the issue and call on our better angels on this matter, but that’s not the way to win. The way to win is to show that Trump is a lair with contempt for his own base. Inverting the “pronoun attack” is just the start.
