Rick, I'm just catching up to your July 4th post, nearly 18 days after you made it. I was in a funk leading up to the July 4th weekend and the 250th "celebration" we should have been enjoying. Why? For all the obvious reasons. But then it was over, and I pulled out of it, put my head down, and tried to slog forward. I finally felt that despite the current conditions, we were somehow going to get to the other side of this nightmare. But your post reignited me. It gave me great reassurance, renewed optimism, and the heartfelt patriotism I so desperately needed. This was exactly what I was seeking without knowing where to find it. Alas, there you were. I should have known that you'd be able to capture the essence of America like no one else. Your reflections of who we are and your reminders of why we are - your deep delivery and intimate musings - well, it was pure brilliance to see. And with the clarion clarity that only you can create. Wow. This was Rick at his best. Thank you.
To be proud of our presidency again will take a lot of work. John Roberts has made it into a kingship for thugs and a constrained institution for progress. It will be an institution corralled into serving the billionaire class.
So, the kings in robes must be deflated. Their project to corrupt the constitution must be overturned.
Fighting against Trump and his minions is like trying to get a four year old to do anything.
Remember, today (4th of July) Trump declared:
"And as our Declaration of Independence tells us," Trump said, "we are all made in the image of one almighty god. And a communist will never say that."
Now I'm just waiting for him to declare:
"Today, (July 4) we are celebrating the great day when President George Washington, in 1776, tweeted to the Communist King of England, "Let my people go".
How many fallacies can you see in that made up statement (so far)
Thank you Rick for once again moving me to tears with your heartfelt, beautifully expressed words and emotion. The last couple of weeks have left me feeling defeated, and the words "how do we get out of this" ring true. I have researched other countries that will grant visas to retired folks on the days I feel overwhelmed. But I have three young grandchildren, and they deserve better than this. I love this country; I won't abandon her. Thank you for these motivating words! Honored to be in the fight with you and this community.
Without a doubt, your comments and love for OUR country, your shared fears, and optimism is unequivocally excellent. To the core of what so many are feeling. Discouraged, sad, feeling defeated but it is up to each one of us, to transform those negative thoughts into power for change. Such a beautiful and heartfelt honesty. But acknowledging, there is always the opportunity to change the environment and it is up to each one of, to stand up in our own truth, and fight back. Thank you for your words and encouragement. America will survive.
Thank you for the wonderful, podcast. I believe as you we can bring hope and unity together for all of us. I will never give up on America especially with the lady and the torch. That was our ancestors gave to us regardless of our own destiny. Patriotism is important me and everyone. I wish you well on the incoming of a new grandchild. Life is important everyone despite what is happening at the present moment in our time. Happy Fourth and 250 years.

“One foot in front of the other.” That’s basic good advice for these times. Don’t give up. Thanks for everything you do Rick.

Beautiful
Best commentary I’ve watched re: the 250 years of the United States. You touched my heart when you choked up, Rick. Thank you for your work.
Rick,
Thanks you for your heartfelt and hopeful words.

William Penn invited my Deutsche ancestors. They all came from somewhere!

Yet another soulful, remarkable essay by the incomparable Mr Wilson. Once again, he made me cry with his passion and eloquence.
Me too.
